As a young mother, the mere thought of stalking sends shivers down my spine. The crime not only threatens my sense of security but also instills a profound fear for the well-being of my family. Stalking is not just an invasion of personal space; it's an assault on the very essence of what it means to create a safe and nurturing environment for our children.

Sadly, that fear became a reality for my family. My husband was beaten and hospitalized by my stalker. I was almost run over by my stalker while I was pregnant. My stalker loomed over me and my daughter while we faced our intimidators in court. My stalker was unafraid of me, my husband, the judicial system, or law enforcement. I know this because he went as far as to pull a gun on a law enforcement officer. It could have been us.

The impact of stalking is deeply unsettling. It's not merely about the unwanted attention and persistance; it's about the erosion of the sanctuary that our homes should provide. As a mother, I strive to shield my daughter from harm, but the pervasive threat of a stalker undermines that instinctive need to protect.

The constant fear and anxiety that accompanies the consequences of being stalked seeps into the precious moments I share with my daughter. Instead of relishing in the joy of parenthood, I find myself haunted by the shadows of an unseen menace, forever altering the way I navigate the world with her.

Stalking disrupts the routine and rhythm that are vital for a young family. Simple tasks like going to the grocery store, taking a walk, or working in our garden become fraught with apprehension. What should be carefree moments are tainted by the unnerving awareness that we might be watched, our privacy invaded by someone fixated on causing harm.

Furthermore, the toll on mental health is immeasurable. The constant vigilance and fear take a toll on my emotional well-being, creating an atmosphere of tension and anxiety that no family should endure. It's heartbreaking to witness the innocence of my daughter overshadowed by the dark cloud of uncertainty that stalking brings.

As a young mother, I implore society to recognize the gravity of stalking and to rally against this insidious crime. It is not just a violation of personal boundaries; it is an affront to the very fabric of family life. We deserve to raise our children in an environment free from the fear of being watched and intimidated. Stalking is a menace that must be eradicated, not only for the sake of individual victims but for the preservation of the sanctity of family life.

While North Carolina has taken steps to address stalking through legislative measures, the evolving nature of this crime necessitates a critical examination of our existing legal framework. Stalking remains a pervasive threat to the safety and well-being of individuals in our community, and it is imperative that we fortify our laws to better protect victims.

The laws are well structured for victims of domestic violence, but all victims of violence should be afforded the same protection. I am advocating for an automatic firearm prohibition as a bond condition for all violent crimes, including stalking. It's time for us to stand united against this crime and ensure that our homes remain places of love, security, and joy.
