Prevent the Closure of Our Cherished School

Prevent the Closure of Our Cherished School
The Issue
When I first immigrated from the Dominican Republic, my fears about acceptance and adjusting to a new life were palpable. That was when our school, TEACH (The East New York Arts and Civics High School), became my sanctuary. The warm smiles that greeted me on the first day endeared me to this unique institution. Despite being small in size, the school became my extended family, ensuring everyone received a balanced education, without discrimination or inequality. In our school, we are united as a family.
Today, the educators and students of TEACH face a daunting challenge: the risk of forced closure by the government owing to our small size and lower student enrollment. However, this perspective fails to recognize the immense value of small schools. According to the National Education Policy Center, smaller schools are known for promoting greater student satisfaction, increasing parent involvement, and creating communities that break down the barriers of discrimination.
We urge our local and state governments to recognize the importance of nurturing such intimate learning environments. The closure of TEACH would not just displace students but significantly dismantle a community that has been a beacon of hope and inclusivity for many, like me, who had feared being lost in a large, unfamiliar country.
Every signature on this petition is a voice supporting the preservation of our small but mighty school. This is not just about saving a building; it's about preserving a nurturing community that fosters equality, respect, and unity. Please sign this petition to keep our family together.
