Letitia Ann James is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the Attorney General of New York since 2019, after winning the 2018 election to succeed Barbara Underwood. A trailblazer, she is the first African American and first woman to hold this position. James is a member of the Democratic Party and the Working Families Party. Prior to her role as Attorney General, she was the New York City Public Advocate from 2014 to 2018 and served as a member of the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013. Her career reflects a strong commitment to public service and advocacy, and she has also worked as a journalist. James is known for her dedication to justice and equality.
