We call upon our representatives and relevant authorities to stop any plans for an Autism Database in Mississippi. Although intended to provide better care and services for those on the Autism spectrum, this raises significant concerns about privacy and human rights. Confidential medical information should remain protected and not subject to potential breaches or misuse. Additionally, stigma and discrimination associated with autism still persist in our society, this kind of exposure could inadvertently contribute to them. According to a study by Paul Shattuck in the journal Pediatrics, teens on the autism spectrum are significantly more likely to be socially isolated, making them particularly vulnerable to discrimination (Shattuck et al., 2011).
