Petition: Raise ODSP Rates and Reform Harmful Policies

Petition: Raise ODSP Rates and Reform Harmful Policies
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are calling on the Government of Ontario to urgently reform the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) so that disabled Ontarians can live with dignity, stability, and basic security.
As of 2025, a single person on ODSP receives a maximum of just $1,408 per month. This is far below Ontario’s poverty line (approximately $2,300/month) and does not reflect the real cost of living. Rent, food, and basic necessities already exceed what ODSP provides, forcing recipients to live in deep poverty.
Current ODSP policies also create barriers instead of support:
Punishing work: After $1,000 in earnings, 75% is clawed back, discouraging people from improving their situation.
Housing instability: The shelter allowance is removed if someone becomes unhoused, increasing the risk of homelessness.
Administrative hardship: Strict reporting rules and penalties for minor errors create long-term financial burdens.
These policies are not just inadequate- they are actively harmful.
We are calling for the following immediate reforms:
1. Raise ODSP rates to meet the poverty line
Increase base rates to at least $2,300/month for a single adult, with ongoing inflation indexing.
2. Reform earnings rules
Reduce clawbacks to 50% after $1,000 in earnings so recipients can benefit from working.
3. Protect housing support
Ensure income does not drop if someone loses housing- combine shelter and basic needs into a stable, flat benefit.
4. Reduce administrative penalties
Allow flexible reporting timelines, forgive honest mistakes, and prevent long-term repayment burdens for minor errors.
Disabled Ontarians deserve more than survival- they deserve dignity, stability, and the opportunity to live полноцен lives.
We urge the Ontario government to act immediately.
