Oppose the Construction of Bridges in Walnut Woods State Park and Purple Martin Lakes!

The Issue

The City of West Des Moines recently approved a feasibility study that could place 5-lane bridges through Walnut Woods State Park and Purple Martin Lakes Water Resource Area.

We strongly oppose the planned construction of bridges through these environmentally sensitive areas. We believe that these developments are not only unnecessary but also pose a formidable threat to our invaluable and irreplaceable natural resources.

Walnut Woods State Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, the largest stand of Black Walnut trees in North America, and the irreplaceable Commerce Ledges. The Purple Martin Lakes Water Resource Area is a crucial reservoir for clean drinking water for central Iowa residents.

The introduction of infrastructure like these bridges risks disturbing the balance of these delicate ecosystems, potentially leading to habitat loss for many species and disruption of water resources. This decision is not only about the beauty of these places, it's about preserving our natural environment, keeping it safe, and ensuring its survival for future generations.

What we urgently need is sustainable urban planning that embraces citizen input and respects nature, not disrupts it! We, therefore, invite all concerned citizens to make their voices heard and urge the WDM city council members to reconsider the proposed bridge development plan.

Join us in saying NO to such destructive plans and protect our precious ecosystems. We are a community that respects wildlife, ecology, and precious parklands above unnecessary infrastructures. Please sign this petition.
