The Issue

The Department of Homeless Services is planning to convert the shelter at 5244 Kings Highway into a single adult men's shelter by the end of July 2026.

Under the previous mayoral administration, Council Member Farah Louis and community stakeholders were assured that the site would continue operating as a shelter serving families with children. This location has been the subject of significant community concern in the past. In 2022, the facility was also proposed as a transitional housing site for adult male offenders. Following strong community advocacy and public opposition, those plans did not move forward.

This proposed change is being made without first having a meaningful conversation with the surrounding community.

In addition, the surrounding area presents challenges for the proposed shelter model. The site has limited access to public transportation and employment opportunities, both of which are important resources for individuals working toward stability and independence. At the same time, the facility is located within close proximity to several daycare centers and other family-oriented institutions.

Our community has consistently voiced concerns about the placement of single adult men at this location and has advocated for the site to continue serving families with children. We are calling on the City to honor its previous commitments, engage in meaningful dialogue with community stakeholders, and work collaboratively to identify solutions that meet the needs of both shelter residents and the surrounding neighborhood.

Support the office of Council Member Farah Louis and sign this petition to stand against the conversion of this shelter site from families with children to single adult men.
