Nintendo fans want an ergonomic Joy-Con Pro
The Issue
Nintendo revolutionized gaming with the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 with the unique Joy-Con design philosophy: play anywhere, anytime, with anyone.
But for many players — including commuters, adults with larger hands, parents sharing the family TV, and gamers with hand pain or disabilities, extended handheld play can become physically uncomfortable. Discussions about "hand cramp" have been common throughout the life of both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, highlighting a challenge that many handheld-focused players continue to experience.
While both generations of Switch Pro Controllers are widely praised for comfort and ergonomics, players who primarily use handheld mode still largely rely on aftermarket grips, cases, and third-party controllers that often involve compromises in build quality, features, portability, or the cohesive design experience Nintendo is known for.
A first-party “Joy-Con Pro” designed specifically for handheld gaming could provide:
- Improved ergonomics and grip comfort
- Larger buttons and analog sticks
- Better accessibility for players with hand injuries or disabilities
- A more traditional controller layout for action-heavy games
- Premium Nintendo quality and feature support
Games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Splatoon 3, Monster Hunter Rise, and Metroid Dread reward precise inputs and extended play sessions. For many players, those experiences can eventually become limited not by skill, but by discomfort, hand fatigue, or hand cramping.
The demand already exists. The popularity of ergonomic grips and third-party handheld controllers demonstrates that many Nintendo fans are actively seeking a more comfortable handheld experience.
We love the flexibility of the Switch family of consoles and Nintendo's vision of allowing players to enjoy the same adventure wherever life takes them. We simply hope Nintendo will also consider the growing audience of players who experience those adventures primarily in handheld mode.
Please consider developing a premium ergonomic "Joy-Con Pro" option for Nintendo Switch 2.
