CAUTION: PEOPLE at work NOT 'MEN' at Work - Change Discriminatory Signages
CAUTION: PEOPLE at work NOT 'MEN' at Work - Change Discriminatory Signages
The Issue
My name is Meher, I am 8 years old and I can read independently now. On a recent road trip to the hills I saw many signages that read - CAUTION: MEN AT WORK !! Right next to these signs were women working equally hard, without any privilege's or safety gear - so why demean them by not including them in the warning signages. How difficult is it for the authorities and government to right CAUTION: PEOPLE AT WORK. It's the least that we can do to recognize all who are working hard not just Men.
Even signages in Hindi read - KRIPYA DHEERE CHALINE, AADMI KAAM PAR HAIN and not LOG KAAM PAR HAIN. Some things that hide in plain sight are taken for granted but can still be equally hurtful and biased. This is just one example that caught my eye, but from now on I am going to keep my eyes wide open and call out any such biased references which seem to show that it is only men that work when most women work harder if not as hard.
What is more shocking is that for so many years no one has noticed or bothered to change something so obviously biased. Is it asking for too much to include women and others by using a neutral signage. My request to the Government, National and State Highway Authorities and all other Infrastructure development companies is to please give equal consideration to all workers include Women, Men and Others.
Please help by signing and forwarding this to as many people as you can to bring about a change in Signs and Mindsets.
