The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India. Established in 1988 through an Act of Parliament, the NHAI is responsible for the management of a network of over 70,000 km of national highways across the country. Its functions include maintaining, upgrading, and managing these highways, as well as facilitating new highway development initiatives. In addition to this, NHAI is responsible for implementing the National Highways Development Project, a major initiative focused on improving the quality and connectivity of India’s highway infrastructure.
