The Issue

Growing up as LGBTQ+ individuals, we've experienced firsthand the challenges and misinformation surrounding our identities. It's time for a change in Massachusetts schools, ensuring future generations receive an inclusive and comprehensive education that represents everyone.

Currently, according to the Movement Advancement Project, nineteen states have at least one LGBTQ+ censorship law. Along with that, the White House has been constantly attacking LGBTQ+ youth. Now is the time for Massachusetts to stand up for their LGBTQ+ students. Only eight states require LGBTQ+ topics to be taught in school, so let's make Massachusetts the ninth!

Schools are places of learning, growth, and acceptance. Yet, many curriculums still lack sufficient representation and understanding of LGBTQ+ histories and issues. According to The Trevor Project's 2023 Queer Youth Survey, “60% of LGBTQ young people reported that they have felt discriminated against in the past year due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.” Additionally, “Nearly 2 in 3 LGBTQ young people said that hearing about potential state or local laws banning people from discussing LGBTQ people at school made their mental health a lot worse.” and “41% of LGBTQ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, compared to 14% from 2022.”

These statistics are all alarms indicating the urgent need for change.

Our goal is to create a law that requires and integrates LGBTQ+ education into both social studies and health curricula across Massachusetts. By doing this, we educate students about the diverse society they are a part of, promoting empathy, reducing prejudice, and preventing bullying. As the Trevor Project stated, “LGBTQ young people who had access to affirming homes, schools, community events, and online spaces reported lower rates of attempting suicide compared to those who did not.” Teaching LGBTQ+ history and health issues will empower students, encouraging understanding and acceptance.

Key aspects would include training educators effectively to handle these topics, revising teaching materials to include LGBTQ+ figures and their contributions, and ensuring that all educational content is age-appropriate and fact-based. This initiative is crucial, not only for the well-being of LGBTQ+ students who seek validation in their educational environments, but also for fostering a more informed and inclusive future for everyone.

Additionally, it is important to not follow through with the Trump administration's executive orders that are trying to erase transgender people from history.

Support this petition to pave the way for a safer and more inclusive educational system in Massachusetts. With so much hate coming from the White House, now is the time to act for our rights! By signing, you're advocating for the rights of every student to be seen, heard, and respected in their schools. Join us in calling on legislators to make LGBTQ+ education a mandatory part of the curriculum. Sign and share this petition and be part of this transformative change.
