Massachusetts State Senate

The Massachusetts State Senate is the upper chamber of the Massachusetts General Court, the legislative body of the state of Massachusetts. Comprised of 40 members, each representing different districts across the state, the Senate is responsible for making and passing laws. Members serve two-year terms with elections held in even-numbered years. It occupies a vital role in the checks and balances system of Massachusetts’ government, working in conjunction with the lower chamber, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and the state governor. The Senate is presided over by a Senate President, a position elected by fellow senators.
