Disorganized TDSB covid schedule
The Issue
I believe I speak for students when I say that this new schedule is going downhill. Last year has already been a struggle, as all of us had to home school or go back & forth. A lot of us have been excited to go back to in person learning this year, not anymore though! None of us expected these types of problems:
Little to no lunch time
45 minutes is probably enough time for an elementary student who already has a bagged lunch, but let’s be honest, the majority of high school students go out for lunch. Not all high schools are located beside a food court so we don’t have many options. Considering my school has been merged with another high school, this means twice the amount of students for the same amount of restaurants. Adding to that, many businesses have closed due to the pandemic. On average, it takes 10-15 minutes to walk to a restaurant without a ridiculous line of students & the same amount of time to walk back to the school, that means i have only 15 minutes to order, have my food made, & to eat it. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE. Before covid when there were tons of businesses & less students, we had an hour & 15 minutes, much more reasonable.
Schedule
Have you ever tried to sit & focus on somebody talking for 2 hours & 30 minutes? Imagine how hard it is for teenagers. Even college classes are only 50 minutes on average & they have a more mature audience. Adding to that, they teach you two subjects during week 1 before switching to two new subjects for week 2 & we repeat that cycle for 4 months. How does anyone expect the majority of students to remember the content from one cycle to the next? It would be much more efficient if we only focused on two classes at a time until they were finished (like last years online schedule).
Clearly whoever came up with this plan has not thought this through. We have very little time for lunch & this new covid schedule is causing a lot of stress for everyone. We desperately need more time at lunch so that there isn’t anybody late for class or eating in the hallway while class is in session. Additionally, we need to focus more on each subject rather than switching every other week. A less stressful suggestion would be to have the same schedule every week until it’s finished (quadmesters).
Please sign this to make a change to better our mental health. Us students need to have a say in our own education.
