Attention all Georgia residents! GA is currently one of only 4 states that do not have a hate-crime law. If there was, it could play a critical role in the prosecution of Travis McMichael and Greg McMichael - the two men who chased down and murdered Ahmaud Arbery while he was out jogging, on February 23rd, 2020, in Brunswick GA.
There is currently an important legislation before the Georgia Senate called House Bill 426. This is a historic piece of legislation that was written to pave the way for the expansion of Georgia's State laws to include harsher convictions for perpetrators of hate crimes.
House Bill 426 opens the way for us to seek greater legal justice in cases where the victim is targeted because of their actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, mental disability, or physical disability.
The General Assembly of Georgia Senators will reconvene on June 15th, 2020. To discuss House Bill 426.
The results of this petition will be shared with the Senators who will be in those decision making seats.
Let’s show them how much a hate-crime law is needed in the state of Georgia by collecting as many signatures as possible for this petition.
Let this serve as our call to the Senate and other law-makers of our state for greater accountability and leadership.
Let it be a demand for greater legal justice for the families of the victims of hate-crimes.
This is for Ahmaud Arbery’s family and countless others who are made to face tragic losses of loved ones and are at the mercy of a punishing oppressive system with no sense of accountability, peace, or justice.
They deserve better.
We can help make a difference.
Stand with us in solidarity, and sign the petition NOW.
Please share it far and wide! - especially to those who are residents in the state of Georgia, USA.
Disclaimer: We know that passing a law won’t really make the root of the problem go away. Slavery was abolished many years ago, but we all know racism isn’t cured by a change in law. Racism and oppression in this country was baked into the foundation of our legal, political, cultural and social systems over the course of 400 years. There is a greater work to be done, much beyond the scope of this petition, that we must acknowledge. We want to call out that if this legislature is won, that this may be more of a symbolic win than a completely ground-shifting one. This is just a small piece of the work. But it is still absolutely an important piece of a much larger whole.
We need to change the system from all possible angles right now.
We need your support.
Let us stand up as one another’s allies as we fight this fight in all the ways that we possibly can.
By any means necessary. #JusticeForAhmaud #BlackLivesMatter #ByAnyMeans
This petition is also dedicated to these Georgia black men who were all killed by police, and whose families have yet to find justice. #SayTheirNames
