The Issue

The Government of Canada has plans to announce an isolation centre in the city of Mississauga. Mayor Patrick Brown has requested through letters to the Federal Government and several pleas on the news for an isolation centre in Northeast Brampton. The COVID positivity rate in Northeast Brampton is the highest in Canada. 62% of cases in Peel are in Brampton.

Mayor Patrick Brown has already stated multiple times that the "lockdown" for Peel will have no change in cases in Brampton because it is not the result of most COVID transmissions here.

If a resident in Northeast Brampton tests positive for COVID, it would take them minimum 45 minutes on public transit or in a car to reach the isolation centre in Mississauga. A large percentage of the workforce in Brampton work in factories, and warehouses such as Amazon and food processing. Brampton also has a significant percentage of the South Asian workforce in the trucking sector, moving between hot spots in the U.S. and Canada regularly.

As per Mayor Patrick Brown, Brampton receives approximately nearly a thousand dollars less in health care funding per capita than elsewhere in Ontario — approximately $1,000 compared to the $1,800 in other parts of the province. In addition, the provincial average for hospital beds is 2.19 per 1000 residents. Brampton, however, only clocks in at 0.96 per 1000 residents.
