The Issue

During Delta State University's centennial weekend, the body of 20-year-old Trey Reed, a Black student from Grenada, Mississippi, was found hanging from a tree near campus housing.

Instead of parades and reunions, the community was left with shock, heartbreak, and questions that remain unanswered.

The university canceled all centennial events and made counseling available, but its public statements have offered little clarity. While authorities have called Trey’s death a suspected suicide, many are questioning how that conclusion was reached so quickly and without transparency. For a Black student to be found hanging from a tree in Mississippi is not just horrifying, it is historically loaded and emotionally devastating.

Trey’s family has asked for compassion and privacy, and they deserve both. But the public also deserves answers. Many in the community and across the country are asking what really happened, and why more is not being done to investigate it thoroughly.

We are calling for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into Trey Reed’s death. The findings must be publicly released, and oversight from state or federal civil rights authorities must be included to ensure public trust.

This is not just about one young man. It is about whether we allow painful patterns in our history to be repeated or whether we demand the truth and justice every family deserves.

Please sign this petition and help us demand accountability. Trey Reed mattered. His life mattered. We cannot allow this moment to pass without answers.
