Justice for the tortured and shot wolf. Demand full accountability in Wyoming case
The Issue
In February 2024, a man walked into a Wyoming bar with a muzzled, injured wolf on a leash. The animal was seen limping, cowering in the corner, and later—after being mocked, filmed, and displayed—was killed with a shot to the head.
More than a year later, and only after massive public pressure, that man—Cody Roberts—has finally been charged with felony animal cruelty.
But this is far from justice.
The wolf’s killing itself was legal under Wyoming law, which classifies wolves as “predators” in much of the state. What drew outrage from around the world was the torture: keeping the wolf alive, injured, and restrained long enough to parade it around in public for laughs.
Now that Roberts has been indicted, we must make sure the case doesn’t disappear quietly.
We, the undersigned, are calling on:
Sublette County prosecutors to pursue the felony charge to the fullest extent of the law—no plea deals, no slaps on the wrist;
The Wyoming State Legislature to reform wildlife classification laws that allow predators to be tortured, mocked, and killed without oversight.
This case is about more than one wolf. It’s about how we allow people to treat animals under the guise of “legal hunting.” Humane treatment doesn’t stop when the animal is wild.
Sign this petition to demand justice for the tortured wolf—and call for stronger protections against cruelty, no matter the species.
