The Issue

In one of the largest and most disturbing dog-fighting busts in Texas history, authorities in Newton County uncovered a brutal operation where dogs were forced to fight for profit and entertainment. When deputies arrived, an active fight was happening. Forty-three people were arrested. Two injured dogs were rushed to an emergency clinic. And 16 surviving dogs were rescued — but even that small measure of hope was ripped away.

Before they could be safely placed with rescue groups, the surviving dogs were stolen from the property. Authorities believe individuals tied to the dog-fighting ring may be involved. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is now working with state agencies to locate the missing animals and expand the investigation. But their fate remains unknown.

These dogs were victims of unimaginable cruelty. They were forced to fight while people placed bets, watched, and celebrated their pain. Some of the vehicles found at the scene contained drugs, cash, and weapons. This was not a one-time incident. It was an organized, violent criminal network that treated animals as disposable tools.

Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states, but that has not stopped it from continuing underground. Texas must do more to hold perpetrators accountable, prevent repeat offenses, and protect the animals who cannot protect themselves.

We are calling on the Texas Legislature, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Texas Department of Public Safety to take immediate action by:

  • Increasing penalties for participating in or facilitating dog fighting
  • Creating a statewide task force focused on tracking and dismantling dog-fighting rings
  • Providing emergency funding for local shelters and rescues that care for seized animals
  • Passing laws to ensure stolen animal victims are treated as a top enforcement priority.

Every dog deserves safety, care, and dignity. These animals suffered in silence for too long. Let this be the case that changes everything.

Sign this petition to demand justice for the dogs of Newton County and help end the cruelty of dog fighting in Texas once and for all.
