Save Rogers Centre / Skydome, home of the Toronto Blue Jays

The Issue

You may or may not have heard the recent news, but as of early November 27TH, 2020 the Blue Jays’ owners and considering a plan to demolish the iconic Rogers Centre (originally named Skydome) which is located in the heart of Toronto’s downtown core neighbouring the CN Tower. It is rumoured the new venue they are planning to build will be smaller and won’t be as close to the downtown core.

As a proud Torontonian, we are standing up against this as the building is one of Toronto’s main attractions and collectively have shared many memories in and around this building. There is nothing more special then going to a Jay’s game on a sunny day, looking up and seeing the Edge-Walker’s on top of the CN Tower watching the game.... or perhaps you are one of those daredevils watching down on us from upon the tower. In addition, there’s nothing like walking around Downtown Toronto and hearing the Blue Jays’ horn ring out from the dome, everyone in the streets instantly knows that Blue Jays just scored a home run! Lastly, Rogers Centre is located in the Entertainment District, just down the street from Scotiabank Arena, home of the Leafs and Raptors. Hence the name, the Entertainment District is full of the best entertainment Toronto has to offer, other examples being the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium. The removal of the Jays’ being located within the Entertainment District would take away a big aspect and make Toronto’s sport industry less connected.

Rogers Centre was one of the first ever ballparks to have a retractable roof. The seating capacity is good and is able to keep up with the demands of fans. The in-arena hotels are also very iconic even though a very small percentage of us are lucky enough to stay in it. This building is also where the Raptors started and have called home for the first few years of their existence. The building is still in very good condition and is very unique compared to other MLB Stadiums. Sure it may need some upgrades but we feel upgrading is a much better path opposed to creating a whole new building and wiping decades of memories. For example, the Boston Res Sox still call Fenway Park home to this day, despite it being built all the way back in 1911. If they have been able to keep it alive and give it consistent updates, then I’m sure we are able to do the same in our beloved city for our beloved Skydome.

Overall, Rogers Centre is too nostalgic and the destruction of it would cause a disconnect within Toronto’s Sports Industry. It is without a doubt one of the most unique venues in the league and Torontonians and Blue Jays fan alike would be saddened to see it go. We hope you all choose to stand with us in protecting our beloved home! GO JAYS GO!! #SaveRogersCentre
