Legalize marijuana in Delaware- The Delaware Marijuana Legalization Committee
The Issue
Inherent in the people of America is the need to be free, and to establish and maintain our liberty.
To my fellow citizens of Delaware, my neighbors, my friends, we are The First State, and by this, we must remain at the forefront of the issues facing our great nation.
We must set an example as The First State. If we were the first we must not be the last!
Marijuana is illegal and listed as a schedule 1 drug by the federal government. It is claimed to be addictive and possess no medicinal properties. This has been proven false. In fact, alcohol fits this model better.
Regardless, many states have defied federal law for medicinal purposes, even Delaware, because the science has been clear, it is not a dangerous plant.
But the progress in Colorado cannot be overlooked. The fact is that the war on drugs has been a failure. But even worse, it has made the citizen who chooses marijuana over alcohol a criminal and puts them in greater harm.
To be free in America is the right of our citizenship and our liberties are guarded by the constitution.
The days of marijuana prohibition is over in the hearts of the citizens, but politics and corporate influence have muddled the facts about marijuana.
By comparison to alcohol is safer and that the federal government has been too slow to catch up with science and public opinion.
We as Delawarians must be a voice for change, it is up to us. We "First Staters" must engage in progress.
We must legalize marijuana completely.
We should allow for the sale, taxation, and distribution between members of our community.
Let us create new jobs and revenue for the state. We can reduce crime, poverty, and incarceration. Let us rebuild our infrastructure, educate our children, assist the poor, house the homeless, and stabilize our debt with the extra revenue.
Let us regain our First State state of mind and be the first state in the east to legalize marijuana.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "Prohibition... goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes... A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."
