Improve access to lead pipe replacement in Evanston

The Issue

Having recently discovered that my own home in Evanston is equipped with dangerous lead pipes, I was shocked and dismayed. For years, I had no idea that this invisible hazard was impacting the safety and well-being of my family. Lead exposure is a serious issue that can lead to severe health consequences, particularly in children, including developmental issues, lowered IQ, and various physical ailments. My experience opened my eyes to the broader situation in Evanston, where lead pipes are more prevalent than most people realize.

Like many cities across the United States, Evanston struggles with aging pipes. Many of the city's pipes are still constructed of lead, putting many residents at risk. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our community to ensure safe and clean drinking water for everyone.

The City of Evanston has made efforts to address this issue, but progress is slow, and many residents remain unaware of the risk and the available solutions. Increasing access to lead pipe replacement services is crucial, particularly for low-income households who may lack the resources to make these critical changes.

We are calling on the Evanston City Council to prioritize funding for lead pipe replacement initiatives and to launch comprehensive awareness campaigns about the dangers of lead pollution. These steps can include financial assistance programs, workshops, and collaborations with local health agencies to educate and empower residents to take action.

Lead pollution is a silent epidemic that requires immediate attention. By improving access to replacement services and raising awareness about the risks of lead, we can protect public health and ensure a safer environment for all Evanston residents. Please join me in calling for these necessary changes. Sign this petition to urge the City of Evanston to act now.
