Implement a statewide moratorium on data centers in Nevada

Implement a statewide moratorium on data centers in Nevada
The Issue
As a third generation Nevadan, I'm deeply concerned about the rapid and unregulated expansion of data centers in our state. Although we proudly lead in technological adoption, Nevada remains the driest state in the U.S. and our natural resources are alarmingly finite. The introduction of 12 massive data centers, all clustered in concentrated zones throughout Nevada, compounds the risk of depleting our water sources and damaging our environment with excessive water usage, questionable land surface temperature impacts, and increased noise and air pollution.
Nevada's current infrastructure and resources can't support data centers. Nobody has conducted sufficient studies on how this surge in data centers will impact our state's delicate ecological balance and our health. The lack of research and proactive planning raise a red flag about the sustainability and logic of building data centers here in Nevada.
Moreover, the economic incentives meant to entice these data centers, such as 75% tax abatement on personal property for 10-20 years, overwhelmingly benefit corporations and could burden Nevadans with unrecoupable losses in tax revenue. The generous tax breaks lead to lost public funding that could otherwise support crucial community services or conservation efforts. There's a grave reminder in this situation: we must not compromise our community’s future in pursuit of external corporate interests.
We urge Governor Joe Lombardo to enact a moratorium on the approval and construction of new data centers, effective immediately. This action would not only halt new developments until comprehensive impact studies are undertaken, but also protect our limited resources for future generations.
Additionally, we call for the removal of existing tax incentives for data centers via executive order. By doing so, Nevada can assert its environmental priorities and ensure that growth aligns with long-term sustainability.
Join me in this important effort to preserve Nevada's precious resources and commit to a future where development respects and reflects our environmental realities. Please sign this petition to demand a statewide moratorium and policy reform that serves Nevada and its residents, not just corporate agendas. Please share this petition!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Kasper
