Honor Allen Congelton: Blue lights and Increased safety measures for road workers
The Issue
Fatalities in work zones have been on the rise according to the CDC, Federal Highway Association, and the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unfortunately a good friend of mine will be added to this years death toll. We must keep our road workers safe. I believe we can prevent some of these senseless, and tragic work zone deaths. Road workers are people with families and loved ones. They deserve to be kept safe. In 2017 Kentucky passed a law call the Kentucky blue lights law. This prohibits the use of blues lights on any motor vehicle except emergency vehicles. I believe incorporating blue lights into work zones would make them much safer. There are many tools we can use to make our workers safe. Some of these include stricter DUI laws, barriers, speed indicators, and small blue lights to put on signs or cones as a preventative measure for these accidents and fatalities. It is unfortunate but it is clear that blue lights and the other tools listed are more likely to catch motorists attention. I believe so many lives could be saved if this were enforced.
Allen’s life could have possibly been saved. Allen was only 25 years old. He was so loved and precious to so many people. He had a family, friends, four year old daughter, and a fiancé that will miss him every day. Allen was a creative and a one of a kind person. If you were with him you were always laughing and enjoying life. Prior to his death he was auditioning to be on Survivor, taking his family to wrestling matches, and working hard to provide for his family. Allen’s death has devastated many and will forever leave a impact on our community.
In a perfect world there would be no work zone accidents but our world is not perfect. We must take action and make a change. The time for change is especially urgent as President Biden has passed a new infrastructure law. This means a significant increase in road work. This also means an increased risk of accidents and deaths. Please help to change this law and keep our loved ones safe. Road workers are not just a vest, they are living human beings. Allen was a wonderful person that was taken from us too soon. Please help me make a difference. Do it for Allen and do it for all the road workers.
