There is an empty bed in a college dorm room at one of this country’s top universities tonight. It belongs to my son and my proudest accomplishment, Luis Alejandro Olarte.

I am asking you to sign this petition to help my family bring attention to the detention of my 19-year-old son, Luis Alejandro, and his father, my husband, Luis Felipe Olarte.

I want to start by telling you about the first few hours after your loved ones are detained by ICE, because I think that is the part people do not understand. Your husband and your child leave on a Tuesday morning. You receive a text from your son saying, “We have just been detained by ICE, I love you.” Then the phone goes quiet.

You call and it rings out. You call again. You start contacting anyone who might know something, but every person tells you to call someone else, and every office tells you they cannot give you information. Hours pass and you do not know where they are, whether they have eaten, whether they are okay, or when you will hear from them again.

I have never been so afraid in my life.

Luis Alejandro is nineteen years old. He finished high school with his associate’s degree already in hand and earned a full QuestBridge scholarship to Washington and Lee University, where he should be beginning his sophomore year right now. He worked incredibly hard for the opportunity to attend this university, and his education means everything to him.

On September 1st, his father, Luis Felipe Olarte, was driving him back to campus. While traveling on I-95 in St. Johns County, Florida, they were stopped and both were taken into immigration custody. Our family vehicle was towed from the highway. Neither of them ever made it to Virginia.

My husband, Luis Felipe, is the hardest-working man I have ever known. Every opportunity our children have had, he has worked tirelessly to help make possible. Watching Luis Alejandro earn his scholarship was one of the proudest moments of his life.

They are currently being held at the Baker County detention facility in Sanderson, Florida. When I speak with them, I hear about the difficult conditions they are experiencing—the heat, the limited food, and the long hours with almost nothing to do. My husband has even shared part of his food with our son.

Today, Luis Alejandro should be sitting in a classroom he worked years to earn his way into. Instead, he remains in immigration detention, worried about his education, his scholarship, and the future he has worked so hard to build.

I also want people to understand our family’s circumstances. We entered the United States on visas in 2018. Our asylum case remains pending in immigration court, with a hearing already scheduled. We have attended our required appointments, and members of our family have valid work authorization. Neither my husband nor my son has a criminal arrest history.

We are currently working through the legal process and awaiting the processing of a bail motion and the scheduling of a bail hearing. Every additional day matters. Luis Alejandro is missing his education, while our family is without a husband, father, son, and primary provider.

This petition is not asking you for money.

We are asking for your voice.

Please sign this petition to stand with Luis Alejandro and Luis Felipe and to call for their case to receive prompt attention and due consideration so that they have the opportunity to return home while their immigration case proceeds.

For Luis Alejandro, every day away also means another day away from the education and future he has worked his entire life to achieve.

Esta noche hay una cama vacía en una residencia estudiantil de una de las mejores universidades de este país. Esa cama le pertenece a mi hijo y a mi mayor orgullo, Luis Alejandro Olarte.

Hoy les pido que firmen esta petición para ayudarnos a darle visibilidad a la situación que están viviendo mi hijo de 19 años, Luis Alejandro, y su padre, mi esposo, Luis Felipe Olarte.

Quiero comenzar contándoles cómo son las primeras horas después de que tus seres queridos son detenidos por ICE, porque creo que esa es la parte que muchas personas no entienden. Tu esposo y tu hijo salen un martes por la mañana. Recibes un mensaje de tu hijo que dice: “Nos acaba de detener ICE, te amo.” Después, el teléfono queda en silencio.

Llamas y nadie contesta. Vuelves a llamar. Empiezas a comunicarte con cualquiera que pueda saber algo, pero cada persona te dice que llames a alguien más y cada oficina te responde que no puede darte información. Pasan las horas y no sabes dónde están, si han comido, si están bien o cuándo volverás a saber de ellos.

Nunca había sentido tanto miedo en mi vida.

Luis Alejandro tiene 19 años. Terminó la escuela superior teniendo ya su grado asociado y obtuvo una beca completa de QuestBridge para estudiar en Washington and Lee University, donde debería estar comenzando su segundo año universitario en este momento. Trabajó increíblemente duro para conseguir esta oportunidad y su educación significa todo para él.

El 1 de septiembre, su papá, Luis Felipe Olarte, lo llevaba en carro de regreso a la universidad. Actualmente, ambos permanecen detenidos en una instalación del condado de Baker en Sanderson, Florida. Cuando hablo con ellos, me cuentan sobre las difíciles condiciones que están viviendo: el calor, la comida limitada y las largas horas prácticamente sin nada que hacer. Mi esposo incluso ha compartido parte de su comida con nuestro hijo.

Hoy, Luis Alejandro debería estar sentado en un salón de clases al que se ganó el derecho de estar después de años de esfuerzo. En cambio, continúa bajo custodia de inmigración, preocupado por sus estudios, su beca y el futuro por el que tanto ha trabajado.

También quiero que las personas entiendan las circunstancias de nuestra familia. Llegamos a Estados Unidos con visas en 2018. Nuestro caso de asilo continúa pendiente ante la corte de inmigración y ya tenemos una audiencia programada. Hemos asistido a las citas requeridas y miembros de nuestra familia cuentan con autorización de trabajo vigente. Ni mi esposo ni mi hijo tienen historial de arrestos criminales.

Actualmente estamos atravesando el proceso legal y esperando que se procese una solicitud de fianza y se programe la audiencia correspondiente. Cada día adicional importa. Luis Alejandro está perdiendo días de su educación mientras nuestra familia continúa sin un esposo, padre, hijo y principal proveedor.

Esta petición no les está pidiendo dinero.

Les estamos pidiendo su voz.
