The Issue

We call on Florida state legislators to place a full repeal to SB2510, the "Schools of Hope" legislation.

There is more than just a lack of several specific components that haven't been addressed (including use of space for hurricane shelters). This multi-flawed bill will cause the shuttering of long-standing public institutions. Additionally, SB2510 will affect property values, creating a snowball effect that will adversely affect all community members.

We the undersigned want to remind Florida lawmakers that threats to public education and the closure of any public school, will be a hot button emotionally charged issue that won't go away. The easy passage of tax referendums to support public schools (from both Republicans and Democrats) prove this.  Floridians are already referring to the Schools of Hope as "squatters". They are citing that these charter schools are all about the "land grab".

The tax paying citizens of Florida, including former graduates will hold our legislators accountable for the closure of our alma maters. Parents and Grandparents of children / grandchildren who presently attend public schools will hold their legislators accountable. This is a faulty bill that feeds taxpayer money to the owners / operators of charter schools - and not public education. The public believes the referendums they voted to pass would support public education, not harm it. Wait until they find out.

The wrath of the voter will be felt at midterms if this law isn't repealed.

We are already hearing back from our legislators.  We hope to hear from more of our friends on both sides of the aisle.
