President Trump is now threatening military action in Colombia — an independent democracy and longtime U.S. ally.

Days after launching an unauthorized military raid in Venezuela, Trump escalated again, warning that Colombian President Gustavo Petro should “watch his a**,” and saying a similar operation against Colombia “sounds good to me.”

This isn’t a joke. It’s a reckless threat of violence against a sovereign nation and its democratically elected leader — and it puts millions of lives at risk.

Colombia’s government has firmly rejected Trump’s rhetoric. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned his comments as an “undue interference in the internal affairs of the country” and a violation of international law. President Petro responded that he would take up arms again to defend his homeland — not because he seeks violence, but because he refuses to allow a foreign power to dictate Colombia’s future through force.

There is no evidence supporting Trump’s claim that Colombia is “making cocaine and selling it to the United States.” In fact, Petro’s government has taken steps to reform drug policy, investing in public health and moving away from the failed militarized strategies of the past.

Whether or not you agree with President Petro’s politics, the principle is clear: the United States cannot use military power to punish leaders it disagrees with. That is not how democracies operate. That’s how empires behave.

We’ve seen this before — in Iraq, in Libya, and now in Venezuela. The consequences are always tragic: civilian deaths, regional chaos, and decades of instability. We must not let Colombia be next.
