Enhance security measures in Manayunk

The Issue

I am the owner of Platform Z on Main Street. In less than two years of operation, my business has been vandalized four times.

Most recently, our storefront window was smashed for the second time in just six months. While I have personally done the work to track down security footage and identify the suspect, a small business owner should not have to act as their own private investigator just to see justice served.

As a small business owner in Manayunk, I am devastated by the recent surge in vandalism. Our community, known for its vibrant atmosphere and close-knit relationships, has been overshadowed by a series of destructive incidents. These acts not only damage property but also erode the sense of safety and trust underpinning our community.

Regrettably, this is not an isolated issue. Numerous fellow business owners in Manayunk have shared similar experiences, expressing fears about the rising crime and the diminishing sense of security in our neighborhood. The absence of a strong police presence and the lack of accountability for these destructive behaviors have left us feeling vulnerable and unsupported.

We are seeing a rise in destructive behavior from intoxicated crowds and a staggering lack of accountability from local university students. We are tired of the lack of police presence and the zero accountability for the destructive behavior that happens on our doorsteps every weekend.

We urgently call for more proactive measures to protect our businesses and to maintain the safety of our beloved community.

To address this ongoing crisis, we are calling on Councilman Curtis Jones, Rep. Tarik Khan, and the 5th District to:

  1. Dedicated Weekend Foot Patrols: A visible police presence on Main Street from 10 PM to 3 AM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
  2. University Accountability: A formal liaison between the 5th District and local universities (Jefferson, SJU, La Salle) to ensure students face disciplinary action for off-campus criminal behavior.
  3. Implementation of a **community watch program**, encouraging local businesses and residents to work together for mutual security.
  4. Promotion of awareness campaigns focusing on the consequences of vandalism and encouraging respect for community spaces.

It's time for the city officials and the police department to recognize the urgency of this situation. Our community's safety and the livelihoods of many are at stake. By signing this petition, you join us in urging the city of Philadelphia to enhance security measures in Manayunk and protect our homes and businesses from further harm.

Together, we can restore peace and safety to our cherished neighborhood. Please sign and support this urgent call for action.
