Elected Officials & UD Reps: Stop the construction of a gas-powered 248 MW power plant in Newark, DE.

Elected Officials & UD Reps: Stop the construction of a gas-powered 248 MW power plant in Newark, DE.

The University of Delaware has leased land on their STAR campus to The Data Centers, LLC. TDC wants to build a 900,000 square foot data center/natural gas power plant on the site--right in the middle of our town of 30,000+ residents. TDC wants to produce 279 MW of power to run their data center (and to sell the excess off for profit), that's 1/4 the amount of the Hope Creek Nuclear Power Plant in NJ--that's a LOT of power generation in the middle of a residential area. There are at least half a dozen neighborhoods and several schools within ½ mile of this proposed plant.
Concerned residents of Newark are asking that this power plant be stopped.
The power plant is a high risk to air quality: New Castle County has already received failing grades for its air quality from theAmerican Lung Association's State of the Air Report for 2013 and children, the elderly and those with health conditions are already at risk from the quality of our air. We can expect this plant to emit the following:
- Nitrogen Oxides (cause ozone, asthma trigger)
-
Carbon Monoxide
-
Sulfur Dioxides
-
Particle Pollution
-
Volatile Organic Compounds
-
Sulfuric Acid Mist
-
Hazardous Air Pollutants
-
Ammonia
-
Carbon Dioxide (greenhouse gas)
This project is a back room deal: there has been a lack of transparency and citizen oversight about this project. The City of Newark became the “public sponsor” for the project without disclosing that to the residents or elected officials.
This project is too close to neighborhoods: Newark is one of the highest density residential areas in the state, with many schools, parks and homes within the one mile mark of the proposed site.
Safety: There are concerns about the construction of a power plant and natural gas pipelines right next to train tracks (and storage yard) that carry tar sands oil through Newark.
Property: Our homes are our biggest investments and we can expect home prices to go down with a large industrial power plant as a neighbor.
Noise: The representatives from TDC have said that the residents nearest to the plant can expect to hear noise from this plant 24/7!
Climate Change: Natural gas is a dirty fossil fuel, is NOT renewable and it is directly contributing to climate change that threatens not only the citizens of Newark, but the world.
