Ontario Yoga Studios Unfairly Targeted In Recent Closures

The Issue

We demand that the unfair targeting of our yoga studios in the Toronto and GTA areas be stopped. Yoga studios have been unfairly lumped in with fitness classes. Just as dance studios were provided an exemption to reopen, we are asking that yoga studios be granted the same and be able to reopen as soon as possible.

Taking away our community's access to in-person yoga classes adversely affects their mental health as online classes do not provide the same experience or benefits. Yoga classes are meditative in nature and our participants thrive most in a live group setting. In a time when psychological first aid and connection to community are needed most, why we are shutting down the spaces that provide essential tools for a calm mind, fit body and lead a more inspired life?

Yoga studios should not be lumped in with other standard "fitness" classes that are high-intensity in nature, and therefore cause participants to expel their breath more heavily. Yoga classes are low intensity, mindful movement & meditation classes with breathing techniques through the nose as opposed to forceful exhales through the mouth. Given this, clients can safely practice while keeping their masks on during the entire class as well as maintain 2 meters distance from each other in class. Further capacity restrictions (i.e. 3 metres distance) would not be sustainable for these independently owned studios to survive in the long run.

Local yoga studios have worked extremely hard, often going above and beyond to make it safe for their clients to return to classes they love. Above-and-beyondCovid safety protocols have been in place including pre-registration, client screening, no equipment sharing, social distancing, masks, heightened cleaning & disinfecting to name a few.

This is an urgent matter, please take immediate action and allow yoga studios to reopen as soon as possible.
