Independent/Impartial Review - Six Nations Police Commission

Independent/Impartial Review - Six Nations Police Commission
The Issue
Policing within Six Nations of the Grand River first nation exists as a three-party consent between the Provincial Government, Federal Government and Six Nations Elected Council. The “Six Nations Policing Services Agreement 2014-2018” is the most recent iteration of this agreement and was obtained from the Federal Government through an ATIP request.
The Six Nations community is concerned about ongoing issues within the Six Nations Police department and the Six Nations Police Commission. There are continuing conflicts of interest between commission members and members of the police force in addition to conflicts of interest with the Chair of the Police Commission.
Section 2.3.3 (j), requires that a mechanism be put in place for the independent and impartial review of public complaints, among other duties. Many community concerns were raised with the Police Commission and to Six Nations Elected Council. There have been no responses to community concerns about relationships that exist between members of the Police Commission and Police force. There are concerns about the Chairperson’s unauthorized actions and the perceived optics of his private interests in the community.
With the ongoing challenges that face Policing across the world, it is incumbent upon those that are in positions of power to act accordingly when such challenges, as listed, arise.
Therefore:
Under article 6.2, Six Nations of the Grand River first nation request that the Federal Government and Provincial Government meet with Six Nations via a liaison committee to ensure ongoing communication, monitor implementation of the program and resolve the disputes around the interpretation of the agreement. We also request that public feedback through the independent and impartial review be incorporated through a consultative community process.
