Don’t Let Elon Musk Hijack Nevada’s Broadband Future

The Issue

Nevada was ready to bring fast, reliable fiber internet to thousands of rural homes and businesses. Then the federal government stepped in, and Elon Musk’s company got a piece of the action.

In 2023, Nevada had a clear, approved plan to use $170 million in federal funding to build out fiber-optic broadband across the state. Fiber is faster, more reliable, and built for the future. Construction was about to begin.

But the Trump administration reversed course. They rescinded approval and rewrote the rules — making it easier for companies like Musk’s Starlink, which provides lower-performing satellite internet, to win contracts.

Now Nevada’s plan has been watered down. Fewer homes will get fiber, and more will be pushed onto satellite. Meanwhile, Starlink has been awarded millions in public funds, even though satellite internet is less stable and harder to upgrade.

Rural Nevadans should not be used to boost billionaire profits. Public money should fund real infrastructure — not handouts to tech giants.

We call on the Trump administration, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), and Nevada state leaders to prioritize long-term broadband solutions like fiber. Reject policies that favor private satellite providers over public need. Restore Nevada’s full fiber plan — and stop treating rural residents as second-class users.

Sign now if you believe Nevada’s future should be built on real broadband — not billionaire interests.
