Don’t Let Cartel Violence Threaten the 2026 World Cup

Don’t Let Cartel Violence Threaten the 2026 World Cup
The Issue
Recent cartel violence following the killing of “El Mencho” exposed how quickly instability can spread across multiple Mexican states. More than 250 roadblocks were reported. Buses were set on fire. Flights were disrupted. Entire cities temporarily shut down.
Guadalajara — one of the affected cities — is scheduled to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In just months, millions of fans, athletes, journalists, and families from around the world will travel to North America for one of the largest sporting events on earth. The safety of host cities must be treated as a top international priority.
We call on President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to ensure additional security measures are implemented in Mexico ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Specifically, both governments must launch a joint U.S.–Mexico security review before the tournament to assess cartel-related risks, strengthen stadium and airport protections, enhance emergency response coordination, and ensure clear communication protocols for international visitors.
Preparedness prevents panic. Coordination saves lives.
The world is coming in 2026.
Let’s make sure it is safe.
