I am writing this petition from a place of deep concern and frustration. In Ohio, there are dogs freezing to death due to inadequate housing standards during extreme weather conditions. Recently, I came across a heartbreaking case of a dog who had been chained outside for eight years. Despite numerous calls to local authorities, the dog was denied justice because the bare minimum provisions - an igloo crate, some straw, and a 5-gallon bucket of water - were deemed acceptable by law.

This weekend alone, temperatures are expected to plummet to 11 degrees Fahrenheit. It is unthinkable that our current laws allow pets to be subjected to such harsh conditions without adequate protection.

Accordingly, we need stricter regulations on pet housing standards during extreme weather conditions in Cincinnati and throughout Ohio. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) states that cold tolerance varies from pet-to-pet based on their coat type, body fat stores, activity level and health but recommends that pets be brought inside if it drops below 20° F (-6° C). Yet our state laws do not reflect these guidelines. Hypothermia can set in in temperatures as low as 45°F

We must advocate for those without voices – our beloved pets – by demanding changes in legislation that will ensure their safety and well-being during extreme weather conditions. We call upon lawmakers in Cincinnati and throughout Ohio to revise current laws regarding exterior pet housing standards so they align with recommendations from veterinary professionals like AVMA.
