The Issue

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has long been a symbol of artistic freedom, inclusivity, and cultural celebration. It is devastating to see it turn its back on the LGBTQ+ community under political pressure, just as the world prepares to gather in Washington, D.C. to celebrate World Pride and the 50th anniversary of D.C.'s annual Pride events.

Recently, the Kennedy Center abruptly halted plans for Pride events, including the International Pride Orchestra concert, Drag Story Hour, and exhibits featuring panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, after President Trump seized control of the board and installed himself as chairman. This betrayal comes after months of preparation, investment, and hope, sending a chilling message to countless LGBTQ+ Americans who simply want to celebrate their lives openly and joyfully.

We call on the Kennedy Center to immediately honor its original commitments and host the promised Pride events. Abandoning these events is not just a broken promise; it is an act of exclusion that undermines the Center’s very mission as a home for all Americans.

The LGBTQ+ community has enriched every corner of the arts, often in the face of discrimination and adversity. Denying them a place on one of the nation’s most prestigious stages, especially during such a historic moment, would be a shameful capitulation to fear and bigotry.

We urge the Kennedy Center leadership to rise above political pressure and stand on the side of love, resilience, and inclusion. Pride cannot and will not be silenced.
