Demand stronger action against violence and acid attacks on women in Pakistan
The Issue
The recent harrowing incidents involving Dr. Mahnoor, Dr Mehwish Hasnain and Sana Yousaf and countless others have once again highlighted the persistent threat of violence against women in Pakistan. These cases are not isolated but echo the stories of countless women who have suffered in silence. Each victim has a right to justice and each survivor has a story that our society must hear and act upon.
In Pakistan, the prevalence of workplace violence, domestic violence, acid attacks, the so called ‘honour’ killings, rape and other forms of gender-based violence create an environment of fear and agony for women and girls. Despite existing laws aimed at protecting women, the enforcement and effectiveness of these laws fall short.
According to Pakistan's Ministry of Human Rights, more than 173,000 cases of violence against women were reported nationwide between 2021 and 2024. READ THAT AGAIN! Yet these figures tell only part of the story. Research shows that many survivors never report abuse due to fear, stigma, family pressure and concerns about retaliation. The violence we count is devastating; the violence that remains hidden is even more alarming.
We demand that authorities ensure swift, thorough and impartial investigations into all cases of acid attacks, rape, honour killings, domestic violence and any form of violence against women. Perpetrators must be held accountable and the justice system must be fortified to ensure that such acts of violence are met with the seriousness they deserve. Only when the punishment is severe enough to outweigh the crime will violence cease to be an option. The government must also invest in community awareness and education programs to change societal attitudes towards gender-based violence.
Moreover, the support systems for survivors need significant strengthening. This includes providing medical care, psychological support and legal assistance, which are critical in helping survivors rebuild their lives. Dedicated shelters and support services should be accessible to all survivors who require them like Dastak.
This petition serves as a call to action to all who believe in the fundamental right of every woman and girl to live without fear. By coming together, we can push for change and demand a safer future for the women of Pakistan. Please sign this petition to show your support and urge the Pakistani authorities to take decisive action against this grave human rights issue.
In the Holy Quran, Allah says in Surah An-Nahl (16:90):
“Indeed, Allah commands justice, grace, as well as generosity to close relatives. He forbids indecency, wickedness, and aggression. He instructs you so perhaps you will be mindful.”
Lastly, remember that a society that excuses violence against women is a society that has abandoned justice. Today it was someone else's daughter. Tomorrow, it could be yours. WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR SYMPATHY. WE ARE DEMANDING JUSTICE. ⚖️
