Demand Independent Medical Investigation into the Death of General Sheegow Ahmed Ali

Demand Independent Medical Investigation into the Death of General Sheegow Ahmed Ali
The Issue
We demand an independent investigation into the death of General Sheegow Ahmed Ali, the only Somali Bantu general in the Somali National Army (SNA) who bravely led efforts to defeat Al-Shabaab and defend his people. His death marks a tragic and unjust end to a life dedicated to service and sacrifice.
Background:
General Sheegow Ahmed Ali was a distinguished commander who liberated vast regions in Lower and Upper Shabelle, taking significant strides in protecting Somali communities from Al-Shabaab. However, on August 18, 2023, General Sheegow was unlawfully arrested in Mogadishu, Somalia by tribal militias. The raid on his residence resulted in the tragic deaths of eight individuals, including family members and security personnel. This illegal assault undermined national security and represented a severe violation of human rights.
The Somali Bantu, who make up up to 40% of the national population, have long been excluded from political and military power, leading to their marginalization and persecution. Despite this, the Somali Federal Government, with international military support, has continued to oppress the Somali Bantu people. General Sheegow’s leadership, which sought to empower the Somali Bantu in their fight against Al-Shabaab, was perceived as a threat to the dominant majority clans and resulted in his arrest and death.
The Persecution of the Somali Bantu People:
The Somali Bantu have endured centuries of displacement, violence, starvation, and exclusion. These atrocities, compounded by attacks from Al-Shabaab and tribal militias, have left Somali Bantu communities without protectionand representation in national security forces. General Sheegow was in the process of organizing Somali Bantu communities to fight back against these threats when his life was cut short.
Our Demands:
We call for immediate action to ensure justice for General Sheegow, his family, and the Somali Bantu community:
Independent Investigation:
We demand an independent investigation into the death of General Sheegow Ahmed Ali to uncover the truth behind his unlawful arrest, mistreatment, and death. Accountability must be pursued for those responsible for his arrest and the tragic loss of lives at his home.
Justice for the Attack on General Sheegow’s Residence:
The assault on General Sheegow’s residence, which resulted in the death of eight individuals, must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible must be brought to justice.
End Military Aid to Somalia:
The international community should halt military support to the Somali Federal Government, as the current administration has been complicit in human rights violations against the Somali Bantu people. U.S. and other international military support should not continue to fuel the oppression of marginalized communities.
Recognition of Somali Bantu Rights:
The Somali government must acknowledge and address the ongoing marginalization of the Somali Bantu, ensuring equal representation in all political, economic, and security sectors. It is time for the Somali Bantu people to be included in the national decision-making process.
Support for Peaceful Demonstrations:
The Somali government must respect the right to peaceful protest. Civilians must be allowed to voice their concerns and demands without facing violence or intimidation.
Empower Somali Bantu Communities:
The Somali government must grant Somali Bantu communities the right to defend themselves, including the right to access weapons for self-defense and the opportunity to join the Somali National Army and other security forces to ensure their protection.
Why This Matters:
The death of General Sheegow Ahmed Ali is a reflection of the systemic oppression faced by the Somali Bantu people. General Sheegow was not just a commander; he was a beacon of hope for the Somali Bantu, who have long been excluded from national security and political participation. His leadership was pivotal in uniting marginalized communities to defend their rights and fight for a better future.
We cannot allow his death to be in vain. The Somali Bantu have suffered long enough. We demand justice, accountability, and an end to the oppression they have faced for generations. The time for change is now.
Justice for General Sheegow Ahmed Ali and the Somali Bantu People!
