The Issue

TO: The Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Premier Doug Ford, and the Ombudsman of Ontario

PREAMBLE:

We, the undersigned, have lost confidence in the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) ability to manage the marine transit network of Eastern Ontario.

What was promised as a "green modernization" has become a $110 Million+ catastrophe. The MTO has treated our critical infrastructure like a "Ferry Development Simulator," wasting taxpayer money on experimental vanity projects while neglecting the basic transportation needs of islanders and commuters.

THE EVIDENCE OF FAILURE:

Fiscal Irresponsibility: The government spent over $110 Million (vessels, dredging, dock reconstruction) for a solution that could have been achieved for $30 Million by retrofitting the existing fleet. We paid an ~$80 Million premium for a vessel that breaks down constantly and offers no significant capacity increase.

The "Green" Deception: The new vessels are currently burning diesel generators because shore power infrastructure is nonexistent. Taxpayers are paying $150,000–$200,000/month in fuel for "electric" boats.

Gross Negligence: The MTO neglected the mandatory drydock maintenance of the Wolfe Islander III, gambling on the new boat's arrival. This negligence has left the region with two broken boats and zero contingency plan for the Glenora Ferry, threatening to isolate Prince Edward County.

Economic Destruction: The unreliability of this service is destroying the Wolfe Island economy, killing tourism, and forcing residents to flee the island. This exodus is directly worsening the housing crisis in Kingston by increasing demand in an already suffocated rental market.

Bureaucratic Incompetence: While private citizens (like the creator of Common Ground Ontario) can build functional housing solutions for $168 in 14 hours, and Canadian innovators like Edison Motors build working hybrid trucks in backyard tents, the MTO cannot deliver a working ferry with $100 Million and an army of consultants.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, DEMAND THE FOLLOWING IMMEDIATE ACTIONS:

1. A FULL FORENSIC AUDIT

We demand an independent, forensic audit of the entire Wolfe Islander IV and Amherst Islander II procurement and infrastructure process. We want to know exactly where the $110 Million went, why the shore power infrastructure is years behind, and who authorized the cannibalization of the Amherst Islander II.

2. IMMEDIATE RETROFIT FUNDING

We demand the immediate allocation of funds to drydock and retrofit the Wolfe Islander III (and the Glenora fleet) to a reliable diesel-electric standard. We need a proven "Workhorse" backup to save our transit network from the failure of the "Cadillac" experiments.

3. RESIGNATION OF THE MINISTER

We demand the immediate resignation of the Minister of Transportation. The decision to neglect the maintenance of our existing fleet, the failure to deliver shore power, and the total lack of a contingency plan constitute a dereliction of duty that endangers public safety and economic stability.

Stop playing simulator. Fix the transport. Accountability starts now.
