Reduction/Discussion of Blasting in the area of the Cumberland Quarry

The Issue

For those that reside in neighborhood abutting Manville Hill Road and surrounding areas, blasting in or near the Cumberland Quarry has become part of normal life. According to most reports, blasting occurs twice a week however, over the past 6 months, blasting has increased in number as well as intensity.

Several residents have taken to local Facebook groups to vent their frustration directly after an unannounced and seemingly unscheduled blast occurs. Some recent commentary:

  • “That was one of the loudest I have ever heard from the quarry”
  • "It is getting out of control!! And why do they start working so early in the morning? 6:30am is unacceptable!!!"
  • “Yeah that one was definitely one of the biggest we’ve experienced here. It’s crazy. What kind of damage would that be doing to the houses?!"

Despite several resident complaints, the excessive and intense blasting continues.  Residents have contacted town officials and have been directed to the state fire marshal to fill out complaint forms, however no remedies have resulted.

The residents of Cumberland and surrounding areas respectfully request that this recurring issue be investigated.  Furthermore, it is requested that a comprehensive schedule of blasting be made available as well as a discussion with the community regarding what kind of long term impacts this blasting can have as well as potential damage to property, claim procedures, inspections and related.
