Create a Mixed-Race Heritage Month

Create a Mixed-Race Heritage Month
The Issue
Who is affected?
Mixed-race individuals are one of the fastest-growing demographics, yet our stories and experiences are often overlooked in broader conversations about race and identity. Many of us face the daily challenge of not fitting neatly into singular racial categories. This can lead to feelings of alienation and disconnection, as we are frequently expected to “choose” one part of our identity over another. As a therapist of Mixed race —Afro-Eurasian— heritage who works with Mixed-race clients, I’ve seen firsthand how this lack of visibility and recognition can negatively impact mental health. People who identify as Mixed often struggle with self-acceptance and belonging because their unique experiences are overlooked and absorbed into monoracial narratives. This problem affects millions of Mixed-race individuals who deserve to be seen, heard, and validated for who they truly are.
What is at stake?
If we continue to overlook the unique identities of Mixed-race individuals, we risk perpetuating a harmful cycle of invisibility, exclusion, and internal conflict. Without representation, future generations of Mixed-race individuals may grow up without the role models they need to feel pride in their heritage. On the other hand, establishing a Mixed-Race Heritage Month would provide a platform to celebrate our stories, successes, and challenges. It would offer much-needed visibility, reinforcing the message that Mixed-race identities are valid and important. The creation of this month would help foster a sense of belonging and solidarity within the Mixed-race community and promote a broader understanding of what it means to live with multiple racial heritages.
Why is now the time to act?
Now is the time to act because our society is increasingly aware of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Yet, Mixed-race individuals continue to be underrepresented and misunderstood. As Professor Ronald Sundstrom stated, “By assigning labels to others that they didn’t choose for themselves, we delegitimize their race, which is a form of xenophobia.” We cannot afford to wait any longer to create spaces where Mixed-race people can thrive. By establishing a Mixed-Race Heritage Month now, we can ensure that this growing community is recognized and celebrated. Let’s act now to pave the way for future generations, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and empowered in their identities. Sign the petition and help make Mixed-Race Heritage Month a reality today!
