Save The Essex Cube

The Issue

The residents of the Essex community are expressing their opposition to the proposed removal of the Essex Cube, an iconic local landmark since 1979.

The Essex community fully supports and advocates for maintenance and improvements for the Essex Cube. Among the many improvements that could be made in our neighborhoods, the community supports the proposed incorporation of local artwork to the landmark and its surrounding grounds but not at the cost of removal of the Cube. This petition advocates for the reallocation of the funds that are going to be used on the removal of the Cube to instead be focused on other projects that can actually improve Essex, including rehabilitation centers to help combat the rampant drug addiction present throughout the community, waste & recycling services to diminish local pollution, and local small business support to prevent closings greatly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. By not signing this petition, you are lending your support for precious funds and resources to be used on the removal of the Cube instead of the above listed issues that should be prioritized.

The Essex Cube is a part of daily life in Eastern Baltimore County. It is a warm welcome back every time I return home from traveling. The community wants the Cube to be as prominent and visible as it has been for the past 42 years, not dismantled and displayed in the heritage center. “Cubie” himself has become the mascot of the annual Essex Day Celebration because he is an irreplaceable piece of the identity of Essex past, present, and hopefully future. The Cube represents an experience that you will find, to quote the slogan coined and passed down by a multi-generational Essex family, “Nowhere Else But Essex.”
