Ben Cardin is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as a United States Senator from Maryland from 2007 until 2025. He previously represented Maryland's 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 2007 and was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1967 to 1987, serving as its speaker from 1979 to 1987. Cardin holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland, graduating first in his class. Throughout his career, he has been known for his advocacy on health care, environmental protection, and human rights. He co-authored the Magnitsky Acts and was instrumental in legislation supporting small businesses. Cardin announced he would not seek reelection in 2024, concluding over five decades in public service.
