Cannabis Is Legal in Nevada—Don’t Strip Gun Rights from Law-Abiding Users

The Issue

Nevada legalized recreational cannabis in 2016. But now, Attorney General Aaron Ford has joined a multi-state legal effort urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a federal ban on gun ownership for anyone who uses cannabis—even legally, in their own home, while sober.

This is a dangerous precedent.

Ford’s position suggests that lawful cannabis users should automatically lose their Second Amendment rights—without a criminal conviction, without violence, and even if they’re fully sober. The legal brief compares marijuana users to heroin addicts and domestic abusers, pushing outdated drug war rhetoric that ignores the will of Nevada voters.

Nevadans should not have to choose between exercising their constitutional right to own a firearm and accessing a substance that is legal under state law. That’s not how rights work.

We call on Attorney General Aaron Ford to withdraw his support for this federal overreach and respect Nevada’s cannabis laws and gun-owning citizens. State leaders should stand up for civil liberties—not help the federal government take them away.

Sign this petition if you believe Nevadans who follow the law deserve to keep their rights.
