Bring Back Passenger Compensation for Airline Delays

Bring Back Passenger Compensation for Airline Delays
The Issue
Flight delays are a fact of travel — but passengers shouldn’t be left holding the bag every time an airline fails to deliver.
The Trump administration just withdrew a proposed rule that would have required airlines to compensate travelers with cash payments of up to $775 for significant delays caused by problems within the airline’s control.
That plan, developed under the Biden administration, was supported by hundreds of consumer advocacy groups and travelers nationwide.
Now it’s gone — and the flying public is left with nothing.
Most U.S. airlines still offer no guaranteed cash compensation for delays, even though more than 60% of long delays are caused by the airlines themselves. And with Thanksgiving and holiday travel approaching, millions of Americans are once again bracing for hours stuck in terminals, missed connections, and out-of-pocket costs.
We call on the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Congress to:
- Reinstate the Biden-era delay compensation policy
- Guarantee passengers are paid for delays of 3+ hours caused by airline mismanagement
- Align U.S. protections with international standards like those in the E.U.
- Ensure accessibility protections for travelers with disabilities affected by delays.
Airlines have enjoyed record profits, corporate bailouts, and regulatory leniency. Meanwhile, everyday passengers lose time, money, and dignity every time they’re left stranded without recourse.
Sign the petition to demand fair treatment for U.S. travelers. Bring back delay compensation now.
