The Issue

To the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,

We respectfully petition the Academy to bestow an Honorary Academy Award upon Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, celebrating a monumental half-century of unparalleled contribution to global cinema.

Since his watershed debut with Annakili in 1976, Ilaiyaraaja has scored more than 1,000 films across nine languages, creating a staggering 8,000 songs and countless hours of original background score. However, it is not merely the astonishing volume of his work that merits recognition, but his sheer architectural brilliance as a relentless musical experimenter.

Ilaiyaraaja fundamentally transformed film scoring by engineering a flawless, cohesive fusion of deep Indian classical Carnatic ragas, rustic folk ballads, and the sophisticated harmonic structures of Western classical music. He single-handedly introduced full-scale orchestral arrangements to regional Indian cinema. Whether seamlessly weaving Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony into a Tamil cinematic composition or applying the intricate fugues of Bach to gangster dramas, his mastery of counterpoint and polyphony rivals the greatest global composers.

Beyond his technical brilliance, his background scores provide the psychological subtext of the films he scores. His music speaks when the script is silent, carrying the emotional weight of a scene entirely through his symphonic movements.

His global influence continues to break new ground today. Just last year, he became the first Indian to compose and perform a Western classical symphony in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, an event the Orchestra itself described as a "milestone in global music history."

An Honorary Oscar celebrates those whose body of work has made an indelible mark on motion pictures. By recognizing Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, the Academy would honor a genuine pioneer who elevated the art of the film score to unprecedented heights.

We urge you to celebrate this living legend.
