Ban LGBTQ themes from children’s shows under PG-13
The Issue
As a deeply concerned parent and citizen, I am troubled by the increasing presence of LGBTQ themes in children’s television shows and cartoons that are rated under PG-13. Our nation's federal age of consent is 18 years old, which underscores the broad societal consensus that considerations related to sexuality are reserved for mature audiences. Thus, introducing any sort of sexuality-affirming themes in shows targeting young children is not only suggestive but entirely unnecessary.
Children under the age of 13 are in crucial periods of development, where they are forming their basic understanding of the world around them. These formative years should ideally be free from content that can implant ideas and beliefs about sexuality before children are ready to understand them in a more comprehensive and responsible manner.
Research has shown that children are highly impressionable and are influenced greatly by the media they consume. Allowing shows with LGBTQ themes under a PG-13 rating does not give parents the opportunity to decide when it is appropriate to expose their children to conversations about sexuality. Parents should have the autonomy to introduce these ideas to their children at a time that aligns with their personal and family values.
We are calling upon the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), television networks, and streaming platforms to reevaluate and adjust their content guidelines to ensure that LGBTQ themes are excluded from children’s programming under a PG-13 rating, thereby preserving the innocence of childhood.
Join me in advocating for a return to more age-appropriate broadcasting standards that respect the developmental stages of our young viewers. Let us take a stand to preserve the fundamental right of parents to determine when and how their children learn about sensitive topics. Sign this petition to urge necessary changes in how children’s programming is rated and curated. Your signature is a step towards protecting the innocence of our children.
