Reduce carbon emissions produced from the healthcare sector

The issue

As healthcare professionals and leaders, Nursing/Midwifery students and Nursing/Midwifery academics, we are asking you, the Ministers of health to provide strategies AND take action to reduce emissions caused from activities undertaken in the healthcare sector.  In Australia, the healthcare sector generates approximately 7-9% of Australia's overall carbon emissions through the procurement of goods and services, energy use, waste and transport.  It is important, that our sector leads the way to reduce our emissions, as climate change will cause lasting and significant impacts on health and wellbeing for all.  Our workforce will be caring for those in the future who will be experiencing poor health outcomes such as increased deaths and illness from air pollutants, extreme weather events, food insecurity and an increase in communicable and non-communicable diseases due to climate change from these emissions.  Hence, as the largest healthcare workforce, we are asking you to take action as a matter of priority, to actively decrease the healthcare sectors carbon footprint as a way of advocating for our patients of the future and ensuring health equity for all. Signing this petition adds your voice to the position statement and white paper to take to the Australian Government, from the work of the ACN Emissions Reduction Chapter, which is passionate about reducing emissions and waste in the healthcare sector.  Every voice counts, so please sign this petition and look out for our work when it is released later this year.  Dr Aletha Ward MACN, Member Emissions Reduction Chapter ACN & Professor Odette Best MACN, Deputy Chair Emissions Reduction Chapter ACN.
