Allow Electric Dirt Bikes on Colorado Springs Roads

Allow Electric Dirt Bikes on Colorado Springs Roads
The Issue
I'm 15 years old, and I've recently faced an unexpected hurdle that could impact my ability to get a driver's license until I'm 17. I was riding my Surron, an electric dirt bike, which I believed to be more like an electric e-bike, on public roads in Colorado Springs. Unfortunately, I got pulled over and was issued a ticket. This not only affects my future transportation means but also highlights a broader issue regarding the classification and regulation of electric dirt bikes like the Surron.
Electric dirt bikes are a modern solution for eco-friendly travel and adventure, providing a sustainable way to get around without the carbon footprint of traditional vehicles. However, the current legal framework in Colorado Springs restricts these bikes from being used on public roads and sidewalks without a license, treating them similarly to motor vehicles, which they are not. The need for a license and the classification based on outdated categories ignores the unique capabilities and benefits of electric dirt bikes.
We propose a new class of electric bicycles, one that acknowledges the differences between traditional e-bikes and technical electric dirt bikes like Surrons. This new class should allow for speeds up to 35 mph without requiring pedals, addressing the technical difficulty of speed limits due to the bike's controllers. Furthermore, these bikes should include necessary safety features such as horns, but not be restricted in the same way as motor vehicles.
By allowing these bikes on roads and sidewalks, we promote a greener and more innovative transportation option for residents. It's crucial for cities like Colorado Springs to adapt to these technological advancements, embracing them for personal transportation. We can open new opportunities for young riders, like myself, while contributing to a decrease in urban pollution and traffic congestion.
I'm urging the city council and transportation authorities in Colorado Springs to address this growing need. Please sign this petition to help reclassify electric dirt bikes, fostering a city that values sustainable and accessible transportation for everyone.
