My son, like many others, made mistakes during his period of active addiction, leading to his sentencing at Westville Correctional Facility in Indiana. While I firmly believe in facing the consequences of one's actions, I am deeply troubled by the environment that he, along with over 3,000 inmates, is forced to endure. The lower level inmates are subjected to wading through this toxic environment. They drink brown water, endure an interior riddled with mold, and suffer from broken windows that offer inadequate protection from the elements. Such conditions infringe on basic human rights and dignities that should be afforded to every human, irrespective of their circumstances.
