The Issue

This is less of an "advocacy" petition and moreso just a petition to get the idea out there and gain support for it to communicate it to Metrolinx and the Government of Ontario: the extension of the Kitchener Line GO Train to Stratford starting in July 2026 is very joyful and welcome news and I believe it would be beneficial for residents of Waterloo Region and an economic-benefit producing action (and therefore beneficial for the Government of Ontario) to plan and construct two more stations on this extended Kitchener Line in Waterloo Region.

With the track running through these areas already and these areas being underserved or at least very time-consuming and inconvenient to travel to and from by Grand River Transit, I believe it is a no-brainer to add stations on this GO Train line at the following two locations:

  • The Boardwalk (at the west edge of the City of Kitchener/City of Waterloo border),
    • Track currently runs just south of the Walmart Supercentre at Ira Needles Blvd and Glasgow St
    • The Boardwalk GRT station is the end destination for the majority of East-West bus routes currently and could be shifted to link up with this GO Train station or provide a shuttle bus to the currently established station
    • Although a lot of bus routes serve this location, with it being one of the biggest shopping complexes in the Region and the current road design making it very difficult and frustrating to get to by car or by bus because of the countless roundabouts one has to go through on Ira Needles Blvd to get to it (which can get very congested during peak periods as well), a GO station here that connects to the Downtown Kitchener GO station would be beneficial for people wanting to access all the great businesses at The Boardwalk or vice versa in Downtown Kitchener by a smooth, one-stop train ride
  • New Hamburg (largest community of the Township of Wilmot)
    • Track currently runs just north of the Nith River where Waterloo St intersects with both Steinman St and Arnold St, not far from the "downtown" of New Hamburg
    • New Hamburg and Wilmot in general is only currently served by the #77 GRT flex bus which is a very uncomfortable and inconvenient ride (from my experience riding every bus route in Waterloo Region)
    • Would be beneficial for the many people from Wilmot who commute into Kitchener-Waterloo, for those who commute to and from Stratford, and for people in Wilmot and the surrounding rural areas who want to make day trips to Toronto or access the airports there

Having volunteered on the Metrolinx Regional Reference panel from 2018-2020 as a representative of Waterloo Region citizens, I know Metrolinx is an organization that plans in advance (as on this panel we were reviewing the 2041 master plan for Metrolinx) so it's possible these are stations people working there have considered already.

But I believe it's better for planning ideas and decisions to be as open and transparent and accessible to public input as possible, so sign this petition to show your support and let's try to make these ideas known by Metrolinx and the Government of Ontario to make Waterloo Region a priority for their "Building Ontario" initiatives!
