The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is a statutory body under the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change established in 1974 to regulate and manage pollution levels in the country. It serves as a field arm for the implementation of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974. Besides pollution control, CPCB also conducts environmental assessments and research, creates public awareness about pollution, and coordinates activities between state pollution control boards. Its primary functions include advising the central government on matters concerning pollution and prevention, establishing standards for environmental quality, and prescribing practices preventing and controlling pollution.
